Here in Eastern Ohio the air finally smells of spring, after an excruciatingly long and snowy winter. It is so sudden that I don't quite trust it. Will we have snow again tomorrow? By the weekend? If we did, that would just be Ohio being Ohio.
The grass is still dull and asleep. There are no crocuses. No daffodils. No lilac.
And yet, the air. The air is strangely welcoming. It does not bite. It does not sting. If you let it touch your bare arms, the air almost feels like a hug. Spring air may be the best air of all. It has so many promises and so few treacheries. After the gusts of winter, who couldn't help but love it? Who couldn't help but smile?
My neighbors celebrated the spring weather with power tools. I could hear them from inside the house, with all the doors and windows closed. It made the outdoors, with the beautiful spring air, somehow less hospitable.
Soon I hope to be surrounded by spring, so that I come home from a walk in the park with enough sensation to fill pages of poems.
